A restoration that took more than seven years
The restoration of the Palacio Marqués de Caro involved an extensive, painstaking archaeological campaign that revealed the building’s true antiquity and helped shape its distinct identity.
The oldest mosaic in València, a Roman villa that served the circus of Valentia, three of the circus’s imposing metae, various Visigothic remains, a tower and the largest surviving stretch of the 12th‑century Arab city wall, the access arch to a medieval tower, the Gothic palace itself, and hidden details from 17th‑ and 18th‑century extensions — all of it was buried, waiting to be found.
Everything has been carefully preserved, restored, displayed, and woven into the rooms and public spaces of Caro Hotel. What was once unimaginable is now a place with a soul forged by the slow passage of time on this very site, wrapped in a distinguished, singular, and unforgettable atmosphere.
Authentic décor
To the clean, geometric beauty of Francesc Rifé’s timeless interior design were added, like a visual perfume, genuine elements uncovered during the archaeological campaign. The quality of the materials, the proportions, the interplay of light, and the use of volumes were the criteria that made it possible to bring together such different worlds in a coherent and balanced way, giving Caro Hotel a truly unique character.
The walls and ceilings of the hotel’s common areas and rooms are dotted with pieces of incalculable value. In the lobby, there is part of the Roman circus cornice; in the Meta Bar, three of its metae; in the corridors and in the restaurant, medieval tiles; and in the rooms, the raw beauty of the exposed brick used in València’s Arab wall.
Time flows slowly within the walls of Caro Hotel, an ally of silence and of each guest’s sense of wonder, as their gaze becomes part of the story of this place.
Hotel craftmanship
There are no two rooms alike at Caro Hotel. Its 26 guestrooms occupy original spaces within the palace that stood here for centuries. Each one has been meticulously and thoughtfully restored, and many feature existing historical and architectural elements.
